1) What pipe sizes can Oatey 31122 gray fast set cement handle?
The 31122 heavy duty gray cement works on all schedules and classes of PVC pipe and fittings with an interference fit, up to 12 inch diameter on pressure lines and up to 18 inch on non-pressure pipe. That covers most DWV stacks and mains a plumber or irrigation contractor will run.
2) Can I use this PVC cement on potable water lines?
Yes. Oatey 31122 is rated for DWV, potable water and irrigation applications, and it complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements. It also meets ASTM D2564, the standard spec inspectors look for on PVC solvent cement.
3) How cold can it be when I glue PVC with Oatey 31122?
Recommended application range is 40 F to 110 F (4 C to 43 C). Below 40 F the cement thickens and cure behavior changes, so cold weather work outside that window should use a cement formulated for low temperatures. Keep the can out of direct sun on hot days to stay under the 110 F top end.
4) Will this PVC cement work on CPVC or ABS pipe?
No. The 31122 is a PVC solvent cement only, formulated to weld PVC pipe and fittings. CPVC needs a CPVC-specific cement, ABS needs ABS cement, and a PVC-to-ABS transition needs a transition cement. Using gray PVC cement on those materials will not produce a sound joint.
5) Is Oatey 31122 legal to use in California air quality districts?

The tradeoff is less working time to seat and quarter-turn the fitting, so on large diameter or complex assemblies a medium or slow set cement gives you more room. Gray heavy duty bodied cement also fills the gap on looser interference fits better than a thin clear cement.
7) Does PVC cement need primer, or is this an all in one?
The 31122 is a solvent cement, not a primer-cement combination. Standard practice, and what most inspectors expect on pressure PVC, is purple primer on both the pipe end and the fitting socket first, then the gray cement while the primer is still wet. Check your local code, since some jurisdictions accept unprimed joints on DWV only.
8) What is the maximum service temperature for a joint made with this cement?
Maximum use temperature for the 31122 is 60 C. That is the joint service limit once cured, distinct from the 43 C ceiling for applying the cement. Hot water distribution above that belongs on CPVC or another material, not glued PVC.
