1) Does the Oatey 42251 shower drain fit 2 inch or 3 inch PVC pipe?
The Oatey 42251 drain body works with either 2 inch or 3 inch PVC drain line, so you don't have to know which size is in the floor before you buy. The body is PVC, so it solvent welds to PVC pipe only, not to ABS. If the rough-in is ABS, order the ABS version of the drain instead.
2) How do I adjust the drain height for the thickness of my mortar bed and tile?
Height comes from the clamping collar, which is reversible and adds 1 inch of height when flipped. That lets you set the strainer flush with a thicker mortar bed and tile build-up, or run it low for a thin assembly. The collar also carries double weep holes and weep channels so water trapped in the mortar bed drains out rather than sitting under the tile.
3) How does the Snap-Tite strainer on the Oatey 42251 attach, and can I pull it for cleaning?
It's a snap-in strainer, not a screw-in one. The square brushed nickel grate presses into the drain body and pops back out by hand for clearing hair and debris, with no screws to back out. Oatey also builds the same drain family with screw-in grates if you want the cover mechanically fastened down, which some owners prefer in rentals.
4) Is a tile ring included with the Oatey 42251, or do I buy that separately?
A beauty tile ring is included. It sits at the finished floor and protects the grout line around the strainer, so you aren't sourcing a separate trim ring to close out the tile edge.
