OATEY 39101 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How much pressure can a 2 inch Oatey Knock-Out test cap hold during a DWV water test?
The 39101 withstands 10 PSI, which equals about 30 feet of head pressure. That covers a standard water column test on a 2 inch DWV stack up to roughly three stories of head above the cap. If your test column is taller than 30 feet, the cap is not the right choice for that point in the system.
2) How do you remove a Knock-Out test cap after the plumbing inspection passes?
The Knock-Out design is meant to be knocked out of the pipe once testing is complete, leaving the pipe end open rather than requiring the cap to be cut off. The molded tab also lets you set and seat the cap without getting solvent cement on your hands.
3) Is a Knock-Out test cap better than a mechanical test plug for rough-in testing?
Two different tools. The 39101 is a solvent weld cap: it cements permanently to the pipe, holds 10 PSI, and is knocked out after the test, so it suits rough-in stacks and branches you will not need to reopen until inspection. A mechanical expansion plug is the one to use when you need to pull the plug and reuse it, or when you cannot cement to the pipe end.
4) Why does the Oatey 39101 have a deeper socket than a standard test cap?
More cement contact area. The deeper design gives a stronger, leak free joint on the pipe end, which matters when the cap is holding a full water column during a DWV test rather than just capping a dry line.
