OATEY 72072 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size pipe does the Oatey 72072 commercial floor drain connect to?
The Oatey 72072 is a 2 inch PVC drain, so it solvent-welds to 2 inch PVC DWV pipe. The body and connection are both PVC, which means a standard PVC primer and cement joint, no caulking or lead and oakum work. If the rough-in at your opening is cast iron or ABS, you need a transition coupling or a different drain body.
2) Is the Oatey 72072 drain height adjustable after the pipe is set?
Yes, it is an adjustable commercial drain. The strainer assembly threads up and down in the body so the grate can be brought flush with the finished floor after the 2 inch PVC riser is set, which is what you want when the slab pour or the tile thickness is not final when the rough-in goes in.
3) What size and material is the grate on the Oatey 72072?
A 5 inch round nickel-finish grate. At 5 inches across it covers a standard 2 inch drain opening and sits in a tiled or poured floor without a large cut-out, and the nickel face matches chrome-ish trim in restrooms, janitor closets, and kitchen areas better than a plain plastic strainer.
4) What is the square ring included with the Oatey 72072 for?
The 72072 ships with a square membrane/clamping ring in addition to the 5 inch round grate. The ring clamps the waterproofing membrane or pan liner to the drain body, which is what you need on a shower pan, a mop sink area, or any floor with a membrane under the finish. If your floor has no membrane, the ring simply is not used.
5) Does the Oatey 72072 come as a complete drain or do I need to buy the grate separately?
It is a complete assembly: PVC drain body, 5 inch nickel grate, and the square clamping ring. What is not in the box is the P-trap, the 2 inch PVC pipe and fittings, and the primer and cement, so order those with it to finish the rough-in.
6) Should I use a PVC floor drain or a cast iron one in a commercial floor?
A PVC body like the Oatey 72072 suits slab-on-grade and wood-frame commercial floors where the waste line is already PVC DWV, and it goes in faster because every joint is solvent-weld. Choose a cast iron body instead where the drain takes vehicle or cart traffic, sees high-temperature discharge, or where the spec on the drawing calls out metal bodies. The 72072's 5 inch nickel grate handles foot traffic in restrooms, utility rooms, and back-of-house areas.
7) What is the Oatey part number I should order for a 2 inch adjustable PVC drain with a nickel grate?
Oatey 72072. That one number covers the 2 inch PVC adjustable commercial drain with the 5 inch nickel grate and square ring, and it is the manufacturer part number to quote to a distributor.
8) How much does the Oatey 72072 floor drain weigh?
5.3 lb for the complete assembly. Light enough to set by hand during rough-in, and the weight is mostly in the nickel grate since the body is PVC.
