OATEY 72172 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size pipe does the Oatey 72172 commercial floor drain connect to?
The Oatey 72172 is a 2 inch PVC floor drain, so it ties into 2 inch PVC drain pipe. It is the body-and-grate assembly for the opening, not a trap, so a P-trap still has to be set below it on the branch line.
2) Can the Oatey 72172 floor drain be adjusted after the slab is poured?
It is an adjustable drain, so the strainer assembly rises and drops to bring the 6 inch grate flush with the finished floor after the rough-in is set in the pour. That is the usual reason to spec it over a fixed-height drain on a commercial slab.
3) What grate comes with the Oatey 72172, and is it metal or plastic?
It ships with a 6 inch nickel bronze grate plus a square ring, so the walking surface is metal rather than plastic. That is what makes it suitable for commercial floors where a plastic strainer would not hold up to traffic or cart wheels.
4) What is the square ring on the Oatey 72172 drain for?
The square ring sets around the round 6 inch nickel bronze grate so the drain can be finished into a square tile or terrazzo pattern instead of cutting a round hole. It comes as part of the 72172 assembly, so there is no separate ring to order.
5) Is the Oatey 72172 a PVC or cast iron floor drain?
PVC body. That means it solvent welds to a 2 inch PVC drain line rather than needing a caulked or no-hub cast iron connection, so it suits DWV systems already run in PVC.
6) What part number do I order for the Oatey 2 inch PVC adjustable commercial drain with the nickel bronze grate?
Order Oatey 72172. That single manufacturer part number covers the 2 inch PVC adjustable commercial drain body with the 6 inch nickel bronze grate and square ring together.
7) How heavy is the Oatey 72172 drain assembly?
The complete 72172 assembly weighs 4.9 pounds, most of that in the nickel bronze grate and ring. Light enough to set by hand during rough-in, one man, no rigging.
