1) Can I use this Oatey thermoplastic vent flashing on a hot-mopped or built-up roof?
No. The 11918 thermoplastic base is not for hot-mopped or built-up roofs. The hot asphalt and the solvents involved attack the plastic base and the rubber collar. For those roof systems you want a metal-base flashing instead.
2) How big is the base on the Oatey 11918 flashing, and will it cover my shingle cutout?
The base measures 11 by 15 inches, which is the common size for a 2 inch stack on an asphalt shingle roof. That gives you enough flange all around to get shingle courses lapped over the upslope side and the lower edge running out onto the course below.
3) Is the Oatey 11918 approved for Type B vent installations?
Yes, the 11918 is approved for Type B installations. That matters if you are flashing a B-vent penetration rather than a plain plumbing stack, since not every thermoplastic base carries that approval.
4) Can I paint the Oatey plastic roof flashing base to match my shingles?
Don't. Paint and any petroleum based product will attack the thermoplastic base and the rubber collar. The base is rigid black thermoplastic that is made not to fade or crack, so leave it as it comes. That also rules out roofing cements and sealants with petroleum solvents in them around the collar.
5) How does the Oatey 11918 seal around the pipe, and does it need caulk?
A non-fading sealing collar on the base makes the seal against the stack as the flashing slides down over it. The weather seal is mechanical, from the collar plus the shingle lap over the flange, so you are not relying on sealant at the pipe. Avoid petroleum based sealants near the collar in any case.
