1) Can I use this Oatey drain on PVC pipe instead of ABS?
No. The 82337 is an ABS body with an ABS socket connection, and ABS cement is not interchangeable with PVC solvent cement. On a PVC DWV system you need the PVC version of the general purpose drain, or a listed transition coupling at the pipe.
2) Is this a floor drain I can use in a utility or laundry area, or is it a shower drain?
The 82337 is a general purpose pipe fit drain, not a shower pan drain. It has no clamping ring or membrane flange for a tiled or mortar bed shower, so it is meant for areas where the drain ties straight into the pipe, such as laundry rooms, utility spaces, and mechanical rooms. For a shower you want a dedicated shower drain with a pan clamp.
3) What size is the grate on the Oatey 82337 and what is it made of?
A 6 inch cast nickel grate with a round top. Cast metal rather than plastic, so it stands up to foot traffic and cart wheels in a mechanical room, laundry, or garage better than a molded strainer would. Finish is nickel.
