1) What size pipe does the Oatey 82318 general purpose drain connect to?
The Oatey 82318 is a 4 inch pipe fit drain with an ABS connection, so it solvent welds to 4 inch ABS DWV pipe. The body is ABS as well, which is why it mates with ABS cement rather than PVC. If your rough-in is PVC, you want the PVC version of the drain instead of this one.
2) Will a 5 inch round grate cover my existing floor drain opening?
The 82318 strainer is a 5 inch round cast nickel grate sitting over a 4 inch ABS pipe connection. If the drain you are replacing is a 4 inch ABS stub with a smaller strainer, the 5 inch round top will cover the opening and overlap onto the surrounding floor. If your existing grate is square or larger than 5 inches, you will see a gap in the tile or concrete cutout.
3) Can I use the Oatey 82318 as a shower drain over a pan liner?
No. The 82318 is a general purpose pipe fit drain, not a shower drain, so it has no clamping ring or bolts for a PVC or lead pan liner. For a tiled shower on a membrane you need a three piece shower drain with a clamping collar. Use the 82318 where water runs straight off a sloped slab with no waterproofing membrane to seal to.
4) Is the grate on the Oatey 82318 metal or plastic?
The grate is cast nickel, 5 inches across, on a round top. The drain body under it is ABS. So you get a metal walking surface over a plastic body, which is the usual choice where the strainer takes foot traffic or cart wheels but the rough-in is plastic DWV.
5) What does general purpose mean on the Oatey 82318 drain, and where would I use it?
General purpose means it is a plain floor drain, not a shower drain with a clamping ring and membrane flange and not a specialty funnel or roof drain. Use it where water needs a graded exit on a slab: mechanical and boiler rooms, laundry areas, garages, janitor closets, back of house areas. It drops onto 4 inch ABS and the cast nickel grate handles the traffic those rooms see.
6) Do I still need a trap with the Oatey 82318 floor drain?
Yes, unless the line below already has one. The 82318 is a pipe fit drain body with a 5 inch grate, not a trapped drain, so it relies on a separate P-trap in the 4 inch ABS line to block sewer gas. On a floor drain that dries out, plan on a trap primer or a trap seal device as well.
