OATEY 82317 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Oatey 82317 drain connect to 3 inch or 4 inch ABS pipe?
Both. The Oatey 82317 is a pipe-fit general purpose drain that takes either 3 inch or 4 inch pipe, so one body covers the two common DWV sizes you are likely to find under a slab or in a utility room. The body is ABS, which means it solvent welds to ABS DWV pipe.
2) What size is the grate on the Oatey 82317, and will it cover a 4 inch pipe opening?
The grate is 5 inches round, which gives you coverage past the edge of a 4 inch pipe opening. If your existing drain opening in the finished floor is wider than 5 inches, you will see the gap, so measure the cut-out before ordering.
3) Is the grate on the Oatey 82317 metal or plastic?
The top is a cast nickel grate, not plastic, so it holds up to foot traffic and cart wheels better than a molded plastic strainer. The drain body itself is ABS.
4) Where is a general purpose pipe-fit floor drain like the Oatey 82317 used?
It is the drain you set in utility rooms, laundry areas, basements, mechanical rooms and similar floors where you need a simple gravity drain tied straight into 3 inch or 4 inch DWV pipe. It is a pipe-fit drain, meaning it solvent welds to the pipe rather than clamping into a membrane, so it is not the part for a shower pan or a hot-mopped floor.
5) What is the Oatey part number I should order for the 3 or 4 inch ABS drain with the 5 inch nickel grate?
Order Oatey 82317. That number covers the ABS body with the 5 inch cast nickel round top, and it is the only model on the item.
