OATEY 72317 3" or 4" PVC General Purpose Pipe Fit Drain w/ 5" Cast NI Grate & Round Top

Both. The Oatey 72317 is a pipe fit drain that accepts either 3 inch or 4 inch PVC pipe, so you can use the same body whether the rough-in is run in 3 inch or 4 inch DWV. No adapter or bushing is needed to change between the two sizes.

A general purpose drain is the one you use for area drainage, mechanical rooms, laundry areas, storage rooms, and similar floors where you need a point drain tied into a 3 inch or 4 inch DWV line. It is not a shower drain and not a clamping-ring membrane drain, so if your floor has a waterproof membrane that must be clamped, you need a drain with a membrane clamp instead of this one.

It comes with a 5 inch round cast nickel bronze grate on a round top. That is the opening you will see in the finished floor, so lay out tile or slab cuts around a 5 inch round rather than a square strainer.

The body is PVC and the grate is cast nickel bronze, so the walking surface is metal even though the drain body solvent welds to plastic pipe. That combination is what makes it usable in areas with foot traffic or cart traffic while keeping the plumbing connection a simple PVC joint.

The 72317 weighs 5.8 pounds, nearly all of it in the cast nickel bronze grate. Worth knowing if you are setting several in a slab pour and want to keep them from floating or shifting before the concrete sets.
