OATEY 72357 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Oatey 72357 drain connect to 3 inch or 4 inch PVC pipe?
Both. The 72357 is a pipe fit drain that takes either 3 inch or 4 inch PVC DWV pipe, with the body sized at 3 inch base diameter and the connection made in PVC. Because it is a pipe fit (solvent weld style) body rather than a threaded or no-hub connection, you are gluing it straight onto the stack or branch line.
2) Can I use a PVC floor drain like the Oatey 72357 on a cast iron pipe system?
Not directly. The body and connection on the 72357 are PVC, so it solvent welds to PVC DWV pipe. If your existing line is cast iron or no-hub, you need a transition coupling at the pipe, or a drain built with the matching connection type. Confirm what the stub-out is before you order.
3) What size is the grate on the Oatey 72357 floor drain and what is it made of?
An 8 inch round cast nickel grate sits on top of this PVC drain body. Cast metal rather than plastic, so it takes foot traffic and cart traffic in a utility room, laundry, or mechanical space better than a plastic strainer would. The round top pairs with the round grate.
4) Is the Oatey 72357 a general purpose drain or a shower drain?
General purpose. It is built as a pipe fit floor drain for utility areas, equipment rooms, laundries, and similar service spaces, with an 8 inch cast grate that handles traffic. Shower applications call for a drain with a clamping ring and membrane flange instead.
5) How heavy is the Oatey 72357 drain assembly?
About 5.8 pounds complete, most of that in the cast nickel grate. Light enough to set by hand during rough-in, heavy enough at the top that the grate stays put under traffic.
