OATEY 72027 3" or 4" PVC General Purpose Drain w/ 5" BR Grate

General purpose means it is a floor or area drain rather than a fixture-specific drain like a shower pan drain or a tub waste. It collects water at a low point and carries it into a 3 inch or 4 inch PVC line, which is how utility rooms, laundry areas, mechanical rooms and basement floors get drained. If you need a membrane clamping ring for a tiled shower pan, that is a different style of drain.

The grate is brass, on a PVC drain body. That combination is the usual reason buyers pick this one over an all-plastic drain: you get a metal walking surface that holds up to foot traffic and mop carts, with a plastic body that solvent welds straight to PVC pipe.

The 5 inch brass grate is part of the 72027, so you are buying the drain body and the grate together under the single Oatey part number 72027. You will still need PVC solvent cement and primer for the pipe connection, since those are never shipped with the drain.

It is a reasonable standardization pick because the one part number handles both 3 inch and 4 inch PVC, so you are not stocking two drains for two rough-in sizes. The brass grate also means the visible wear part is metal across every unit, which keeps replacements looking consistent. Order it by Oatey part number 72027.
