OATEY 72037 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Oatey 72037 drain connect to 3 inch or 4 inch PVC pipe?
Both. The Oatey 72037 general purpose drain is built to take either 3 inch or 4 inch PVC, so one body covers the two common DWV sizes you are likely to find under a slab or in a utility room. The connection is PVC solvent weld, so it goes in with the same primer and cement you are already using on the line.
2) Is the Oatey 72037 a floor drain with a built-in trap?
No. The 72037 is a general purpose drain body with a 5 inch grate and ring, not a trapped assembly. You trap it in the piping below with a separate PVC P-trap sized to the 3 inch or 4 inch line you are tying into.
3) How wide is the grate on the Oatey 72037 drain?
The grate measures 5 inches round and is brass, mounted in a round ring. Plan your finish opening around a 5 inch circular grate face, not a square one, if you are tiling or pouring around it.
4) What part number should I order for the Oatey PVC general purpose drain with the 5 inch brass grate?
Order Oatey 72037. That single manufacturer part number covers the PVC body, the 5 inch brass grate, and the round ring, and it is the number to quote to a distributor so you do not end up with the plastic-grate version instead.
5) Will a brass grate hold up in a commercial utility room or mechanical space?
Brass is the usual choice over plastic where carts, foot traffic, or mop handling are a factor, and the 72037 pairs a brass 5 inch grate with a PVC body. The plastic body keeps it compatible with PVC DWV piping while the metal grate takes the surface abuse.
