OATEY 72017 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Oatey 72017 general purpose drain connect to 3 inch or 4 inch PVC pipe?
Both. The Oatey 72017 drain body is made to take either 3 inch or 4 inch PVC, so you can use it over a 3 inch branch or a 4 inch line without ordering a different drain. It is a PVC body, so the connection is solvent weld to PVC DWV pipe.
2) Can I use the Oatey 72017 PVC drain in a shower pan?
No. The 72017 is a general purpose drain with a PVC body and a 5 inch stainless grate, meant for floor and utility drainage over 3 inch or 4 inch PVC. A shower needs a dedicated shower drain with a clamping ring and weep holes to bond to the membrane or pan liner. Use a shower drain body for that application.
3) What size is the grate on the Oatey 72017 drain, and what is it made of?
The 72017 comes with a 5 inch stainless steel grate. Stainless holds up better than plated steel in a wet or washdown area, and the 5 inch round face is the dimension to check against your tile or slab opening.
4) Is the Oatey 72017 a single part number or are there options to specify?
One part number, 72017, with nothing to configure. The 3 inch or 4 inch pipe choice is handled by the drain body itself rather than by ordering a different model, and the 5 inch stainless grate ships with it.
5) Will a PVC body drain like the Oatey 72017 work on a cast iron or ABS line?
The 72017 body is PVC, sized for 3 inch or 4 inch PVC pipe. Joining it to cast iron takes a no-hub or shielded transition coupling, and tying PVC to ABS calls for a transition cement or a mechanical coupling rather than standard PVC solvent cement. If the line is cast iron or ABS, plan on the appropriate coupling at the connection.
6) How much does the Oatey 72017 drain weigh for shipping or a submittal?
1.46 lb, with a listed volume of 0.147. Light enough to be a non-issue on a bulk order, which is worth knowing if you are standardizing floor drains across a building and ordering by the case.
