OATEY 72157 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Oatey 72157 general purpose drain connect to 3 inch or 4 inch PVC pipe?
Both. The Oatey 72157 is built to take either 3 inch or 4 inch PVC, so one drain body covers the two common DWV sizes on a general purpose floor drain run. Order by model 72157.
2) How big is the grate on the Oatey 72157 floor drain, and what is it made of?
It comes with a 6 inch nickel bronze grate. That gives you a round 6 inch visible face at the finished floor, in a metal grate rather than plastic, which is what most spec jobs want in a walkable area.
3) Is the Oatey 72157 drain body plastic or metal?
The body is PVC, with a nickel bronze grate on top. So you solvent weld the body into PVC DWV pipe and get a metal finished surface. If your waste line is cast iron or ABS, this is not the matching body.
4) Can I use the Oatey 72157 as a general purpose drain in a utility or mechanical room?
That is what it is built for, a general purpose drain, not a shower-specific or trench unit. PVC body for 3 or 4 inch waste with a 6 inch nickel bronze grate suits utility rooms, laundry areas, and mechanical spaces where you want a metal grate at the floor.
5) Does the Oatey 72157 include a trap?
The 72157 is the drain body and grate only. A floor drain still needs a trap in the waste line below it, so plan on a separate PVC P-trap in your 3 or 4 inch run, plus a trap primer if your code requires one for a seldom-used drain.
6) How much does the Oatey 72157 drain weigh for shipping or carrying up to a job?
About 4 pounds, most of that in the nickel bronze grate. Light enough to carry a handful of them per floor on a multi-unit rough-in.
