OATEY 30902 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can Oatey 30902 ABS cement be used on PVC or CPVC pipe?
No. The Oatey 30902 is a black ABS solvent cement, formulated for ABS pipe and fittings only. Joining PVC or CPVC with it is the wrong product, and ABS-to-PVC transitions need a transition cement rated for dissimilar materials. For an all-ABS DWV run, this is the correct weld.
2) Can I use this ABS cement on a pressure line?
No. The 30902 is for non-pressure applications only, which means DWV: drain, waste and vent. Do not use it on water supply, compressed air, or any pressurized system.
3) How cold can it be before ABS cement stops working properly?
The recommended application window runs 40 F to 110 F (4 C to 43 C). Below 40 F the solvent behaves differently and the joint is at risk, so on winter jobs keep the can and the pipe warm until the moment you make up the joint. Maximum use temperature once cured is 82 C.
4) Do I need a primer with Oatey ABS black cement?
ABS joints are cemented in one step with this black cement, no separate primer needed. That is the practical difference from PVC work, where a purple primer is normally used ahead of the cement. Clean and dry the pipe and fitting, then apply the cement with the included dauber.
5) Does this ABS cement meet code for a jurisdiction with VOC limits?
It is a low VOC solvent cement meeting California SCAQMD 1168/316A or BAAQMD Method 40 requirements, which is what inspectors in those districts look for. It also meets ASTM D2235, the standard for ABS solvent cement, and complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements.
6) Is Oatey 30902 low emission enough for occupied buildings and schools?
All Oatey solvent cement and primer products are certified to UL Greenguard Gold, which is the indoor air quality certification facility and institutional specs typically call for. That matters on occupied healthcare, education and hospitality work where the trade is cutting into live buildings.
7) Is the 32 oz can of Oatey ABS cement the right size for a whole house rough-in?
The 32 oz (quart) size is the bulk option for a full DWV rough-in or a multi-unit job, where the smaller 4 oz and 8 oz cans are for service calls and repairs. Net weight is 2.1 lb. Once opened, solvent cement thickens over time, so buy the quart when you will use it through.
8) Does the Oatey 30902 come with an applicator or do I need a separate brush?
A dauber comes in the can, sized for the quart container. For 4 and 6 inch fittings many installers prefer a wider brush or roller to get full coverage before the cement sets, but nothing extra is required to make up smaller DWV joints.
9) Why is ABS cement black instead of clear?
The black color matches ABS pipe, so the joint reads clean and, more usefully, an inspector can see at a glance that cement was actually applied to the socket. Oatey lists the 30902 finish as black.
