1) Can I use Oatey 30889 black cement on PVC pipe, or is it ABS only?
The 30889 is an ABS cement, formulated to solvent weld ABS pipe and fittings only. It is not a transition cement and it is not for PVC to PVC joints. If you are joining ABS to PVC, you need a green ABS-to-PVC transition cement instead; for all-PVC drain work you want a PVC cement. Check the pipe printing if you are unsure: ABS is the black rigid DWV pipe.
2) Can Oatey ABS black cement be used on a pressure water line?
No. This ABS cement is for non-pressure applications only, meaning DWV, drain, waste and vent work. Do not use it on pressurized supply piping of any kind.
3) What size ABS pipe will this 8 oz Oatey cement handle?
It works on all schedules and classes of ABS pipe and fittings up to 6 inch diameter with an interference fit. It is a medium body cement with good gap filling, so it covers the common 1-1/2, 2, 3 and 4 inch DWV sizes a plumber runs in a day, right up to 6 inch.
4) How cold can it be before ABS cement stops working on the job?
Recommended application range for this Oatey black ABS cement is 40 F to 110 F (4 C to 43 C). Below 40 F the solvent cure slows and the joint quality suffers, so on a cold crawlspace or winter exterior run, keep the can warm and work inside that window. Maximum use temperature for the finished joint is 82 C.
5) Do I need a primer with Oatey ABS cement?
No separate primer is required for ABS. ABS solvent welding is a one step operation with the cement alone, unlike PVC where many jurisdictions require purple primer first. Clean and dry the pipe end and socket, then apply the black cement. The can ships with a dauber in the lid.
6) Does Oatey 30889 ABS cement meet code for a drain line inspection?
