OATEY 30999 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can Oatey 30999 ABS cement be used on a pressure water line?
No. This black ABS cement is for non-pressure applications only, which means DWV, drain, waste and vent. Do not use it on any pressurized supply or compressed air line.
2) How cold can it be to glue ABS pipe with Oatey 30999?
Recommended application range for the 30999 cement is 40 to 110 degrees F (4 to 43 degrees C). Below 40 F the cement thickens and cure is unreliable, so on a cold crawlspace or an unheated winter job you want to keep the can and the pipe warm and work in the warmest part of the day. The cured joint itself takes service temperatures up to 82 degrees C.
3) Does Oatey 30999 ABS cement meet code for a plumbing inspection?
The 30999 cement meets ASTM D2235, the standard inspectors reference for ABS solvent cement, and complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements. It is also a low VOC formula meeting SCAQMD Rule 1168/316A and BAAQMD Method 40, which is what lets it be used in California air districts, and it is certified to UL Greenguard Gold.
4) Do I need a primer before using Oatey ABS cement?
ABS solvent welding does not call for a separate primer the way PVC does. The 30999 black cement is a one step product for ABS pipe and fittings, and the dauber is in the can. Clean the pipe end and socket of dirt and shavings, apply, and make the joint.
5) Will Oatey ABS cement fill a sloppy fit on an old fitting?
The 30999 is a medium body cement with gap filling properties, so it tolerates the looser socket you get on older or slightly out of round ABS better than a thin regular body cement. It is still rated for interference fit joints, so a fitting that has gone genuinely oversize should be cut out and replaced rather than glued.
6) Is Oatey 30999 low VOC and low odor enough for occupied buildings?
For work in an occupied unit or a school, this cement is a low VOC formula that meets SCAQMD Rule 1168/316A and BAAQMD Method 40 requirements, and Oatey solvent cements are certified to UL Greenguard Gold for indoor emissions. Ventilate the work area regardless, but on the emissions criteria facilities groups write into their specs, it qualifies.
7) How much ABS cement is in the 30999 can and how many joints will it do?
The 30999 is a 4 ounce can, listed at 0.345 lb and 0.012 cubic feet, with the dauber built into the lid. That is the size most trucks carry for service and repair work; for a full rough-in of a house you are better off stocking a larger can so you are not opening several 4 ounce cans on the same job.
8) Why is ABS cement black instead of clear?
The black color matches ABS pipe and, more usefully, it lets an inspector see at a glance that cement was actually applied to the joint. Some jurisdictions want that visible witness line at the fitting hub. Oatey 30999 is the black ABS formula; if your local inspector or spec calls for a different cement color, order the color that matches the requirement.
