OATEY 30805 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is Oatey 30805 a cleaner or a primer? Does it replace purple primer on a PVC joint?
It is a cleaner, not a primer. The 30805 removes dirt, oils and contaminants from the pipe and fitting surface; it does not soften the pipe the way a primer does. On PVC and CPVC work where the code calls for primer, you still apply primer after cleaning. On ABS, cleaner plus ABS cement is the normal sequence. The clear formula will not stain most surfaces, which is why it gets used on exposed or finished work where purple primer would show.
2) How cold can it be on site and still use Oatey clear cleaner?
Application range runs from -15 F to 110 F (-26 C to 43 C). That covers most winter mechanical-room and outdoor rough-in work. Below -15 F ambient you are outside the stated application window.
3) Will this cleaner pass inspection on a potable water line?
The Oatey clear cleaner complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements, which is the standard inspectors look for on drinking water system components. It is also certified to UL Greenguard Gold.
