1) Can Oatey 30782 clear cleaner be used on PVC, CPVC and ABS pipe?
Yes. The Oatey 30782 clear cleaner is formulated for all schedules and diameters of ABS, PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings. It strips surface dirt, oils and other contaminants off the pipe and fitting socket before you cement. 2) Is a clear cleaner the same as purple primer, or do I still need primer for PVC?
They are not the same thing. The Oatey 30782 is a cleaner: it removes dirt, oil and contaminants from the pipe and fitting so the cement bonds to a clean surface. It does not soften the pipe the way a primer does, and it leaves no colored witness mark an inspector can see. On ABS, cleaner plus ABS cement is the normal routine. On PVC and CPVC where code or the inspector requires primer, use a primer instead of, or in addition to, this cleaner. Clear is often chosen where a purple stain would be objectionable, since this cleaner will not stain most surfaces.
3) What temperature can I apply Oatey 30782 clear cleaner in? We work outdoors in winter.
Application range runs from -15 F (-26 C) up to 110 F (43 C), so cold-weather work down to 15 degrees below zero is within the stated range. Maximum use temperature is 93 C. In cold conditions keep the can warm between joints, since the solvent flashes off more slowly and the pipe surface has to be dry and clean before cement goes on.
4) Does the 8 oz can of Oatey clear cleaner come with an applicator, or do I need to buy rags and brushes?
An in-lid dauber is included, so you unscrew the cap and apply straight from the can. No separate brush, swab or rag needed for normal pipe and fitting sizes. The clear formula flows freely and evaporates quickly, which is what lets you move from cleaning to cementing without a long wait.
5) Will Oatey clear cleaner stain a finished wall, tub surround or cabinet if it drips?
