1) Can I use Oatey 7356S cleaner on any size or schedule of PVC pipe?
Yes. The Oatey 7356S Uni-Weld clear cleaner is rated for use on all schedules and diameters, so one can covers everything from small-diameter drain lines up to large DWV runs. It is a DWV pipe product, used to strip surface dirt, grease and grime off the pipe and fitting before cement goes on.
2) What temperature can I apply Oatey 7356S cleaner in? We work outdoors in winter.
The application window for the 7356S cleaner runs from -15 F up to 110 F (-26 C to 43 C), so cold-weather outdoor work is within spec down to 15 below zero. Once the joint is made, the system carries a maximum use temperature of 200 F (93 C).
3) Is a clear cleaner the same thing as purple primer, or do I still need primer?
They are not the same. The 7356S is a cleaner: it flows freely, evaporates quickly, and removes surface dirt, grease and grime so the cement can bond. It does not leave the visible purple stain inspectors look for. Many jurisdictions require a primer on PVC pressure work specifically so the inspector can see it was used, so on jobs where the code official wants visible proof, order a purple primer instead and use the clear cleaner where an unstained, clean-looking joint matters, such as exposed DWV.
4) Does Oatey 7356S cleaner meet NSF 61 for potable water work?
It complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements and is certified to UL Greenguard Gold. That combination is what institutional and healthcare specs usually call out, and the Greenguard listing also matters on low-VOC interior work.
5) Will this cleaner pass in California air quality districts?
Yes. The 7356S meets California South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) 1171/M24 or BAAQMD Method 40 requirements, so it is compliant for work in the South Coast and Bay Area districts where VOC limits on solvent cements and cleaners are enforced.
6) Do I need cement too, or does this cleaner bond the joint?
The cleaner does not bond anything. It is prep only, a primer-cleaner that strips dirt, grease and grime off the pipe and socket. You still need a solvent cement rated for the material you are joining (PVC, CPVC or ABS) to make the joint.
