1) Can I use orange CPVC cement on PVC or ABS pipe?
No. Oatey 31083 is formulated to solvent weld CPVC only. PVC drain, waste and vent work takes a PVC cement (typically clear or blue), and ABS takes a black ABS cement. Using the orange CPVC product on those materials is outside its listed use, which covers CPVC pipe and fittings up to 12 inch diameter.
2) Will this CPVC cement hold up on a hot water line?
It is rated for cold and hot water systems up to 200 degrees F (93 degrees C), so it covers standard domestic hot water distribution in CPVC. The thicker heavy duty formula fills gaps in the joint, which is what you want on larger diameter hot water risers.
3) Is Oatey 31083 CPVC cement safe for potable water lines?
It complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements, which is the standard specified for potable water system components. It also meets ASTM F493 (CPVC solvent cement) and ASTM D2846 (CPVC hot and cold water distribution systems).
4) Can I use this cement on a cold jobsite?
Recommended application temperature for the 31083 orange CPVC cement is 40 to 110 degrees F (4 to 43 degrees C). Below 40F you are outside the recommended window, so on a winter job keep the can and the pipe ends warm before you make up joints.
5) Does this Oatey cement meet low VOC rules for California jobs?
Yes. It is a low VOC solvent cement meeting South Coast AQMD Rule 1168/316A or BAAQMD Method 40 requirements, so it is acceptable where those district limits apply. All Oatey solvent cement and primer products are also certified to UL Greenguard Gold.
