1) Can I use Oatey 31037 gray cement on CPVC hot water lines?
Yes. The Oatey heavy duty gray CPVC cement is rated for cold and hot water systems up to 200F (93C), so it covers CPVC hot and cold distribution work. It solvent welds CPVC pipe and fittings only, and it complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements for potable water.
2) Is Oatey 31037 approved for Corzan CPVC?
It is approved for use with Corzan CPVC piping systems, which matters on commercial and industrial CPVC specs where the engineer calls out Corzan by name. It also meets ASTM F493, the CPVC solvent cement standard, and ASTM D2846.
3) Can I use CPVC cement on PVC pipe, or do I need a different can?
No. This is a CPVC-specific solvent cement, gray bodied, formulated for CPVC pipe and fittings. Do not substitute it on PVC DWV or PVC pressure pipe, get a PVC cement for that. The reverse mistake is the more common one on a job site: regular PVC cement on a CPVC water line is not an approved joint.
4) How cold can it be to use Oatey CPVC cement outside?
The recommended application temperature range is 40F to 110F (4C to 43C). Below 40F you are outside the recommended window, so cold weather work means keeping the can and the pipe warm until the joint is made, or waiting for the temperature to come up. On the hot end, above 110F the cement flashes off faster and you lose working time.
5) Is this low VOC cement compliant for California jobs?
Yes. It is a low VOC solvent cement that meets South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Rule 1168/316A and BAAQMD Method 40 requirements, which are the two that come up on California work. All Oatey solvent cement and primer products are also certified to UL GREENGUARD Gold, which is what LEED and school or healthcare indoor air quality specs typically ask for.
6) Do I need a separate primer with Oatey 31037 CPVC cement?
CPVC joints made with this cement do not require a separate purple primer under ASTM F493, which this cement meets, though many local codes and inspectors still call for primer on CPVC. Check what your jurisdiction enforces before you skip it. If your inspector wants primer, order a CPVC-compatible primer alongside the cement.
7) Does the Oatey 31037 CPVC cement come with an applicator, or do I buy a brush?
A dauber is included in the lid, so nothing extra to order for normal pipe sizes. On the larger diameters near the 12 inch top end, most installers still go to a separate wide brush or roller to get the cement on fast enough before it sets.
8) How much cement is in the 32 oz Oatey can and is that the right size for my job?
