1) What pipe sizes can Oatey 31131 orange CPVC cement be used on?
Oatey 31131 medium body orange cement works on all schedules and classes of CPVC pipe and fittings up to 6 inch diameter with an interference fit. Above 6 inch, or on loose-fitting joints, you need a heavy body cement instead.
2) Can I use Oatey 31131 on PVC or ABS pipe?
No. The 31131 is a CPVC-only solvent cement, formulated to weld CPVC pipe and fittings. For PVC or ABS you need the cement made for that material; using the orange CPVC cement on them is outside what it is rated for.
3) Will this cement hold on a hot water line?
It is rated for cold and hot water systems up to 200 F / 93 C, which covers domestic hot water and hydronic runs in CPVC. That is the service temperature of the finished joint, not the temperature you apply it at.
4) Does Oatey 31131 meet low-VOC rules for California jobs?
It is a low VOC solvent cement that meets SCAQMD 1168/316A or BAAQMD Method 40 requirements, so it is usable on work in those California air districts. It also meets ASTM F493 for CPVC solvent cement and is certified to UL Greenguard Gold.
5) Is this cement safe for potable water piping?
Yes. The 31131 complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements, which is the standard specified for drinking water system components, so it can go on potable CPVC water lines.
6) How cold can it be when I glue CPVC with Oatey 31131?
The recommended application window is 40 F to 110 F (4 C to 43 C). Below that, solvent cure slows badly and the joint is at risk, so for cold-weather work schedule the glue-up inside the window or tent and heat the area.
7) Should I use medium body or regular body cement on my CPVC?
Medium viscosity, like this orange Oatey cement, fills gaps better and gives you more working time, which helps on larger diameters and when you are assembling several joints before the cement sets. A thinner regular body cement is quicker-setting and suited to small-diameter interference fits where the gap is tight.
8) Is Oatey 31131 for pressure piping or drain lines?
It is classed as a pressure pipe cement and rated for hot and cold water systems, so its intended use is CPVC pressure distribution. DWV work in other materials takes the cement matched to that pipe.
