OATEY 31129 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size CPVC pipe can Oatey 31129 cement handle?
It works on all schedules and classes of CPVC pipe and fittings up to 6 inch diameter with interference fit. The medium viscosity is the reason for that range: it fills gaps better than a regular body cement, so it holds on larger joints where tolerances open up, and it gives more working time on a multi-fitting run.
2) Can I use orange CPVC cement on PVC pipe or ABS drain lines?
No. The 31129 is a CPVC-specific solvent cement. PVC pressure pipe and ABS DWV each need their own cement, and this one is not rated for either. If your fire sprinkler or DWV job is PVC, buy a PVC cement instead. The orange color is the field tell that the joint was made with CPVC cement, which inspectors look for on CPVC systems.
3) Is this cement approved for Corzan CPVC systems?
Yes, the 31129 is approved for use with Corzan CPVC piping systems. That matters on commercial and industrial CPVC where the pipe manufacturer restricts which cements keep the system listing intact.
4) Does Oatey 31129 CPVC cement meet potable water and low-VOC requirements?
It meets ASTM F493 for CPVC solvent cement and complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements, so it is acceptable on potable water CPVC. On the air quality side it is a low VOC formula meeting SCAQMD 1168/316A or BAAQMD Method 40, and Oatey solvent cements and primers are certified to UL Greenguard Gold. That combination is what specifiers in California and in schools and healthcare typically ask for.
5) What temperature can you apply Oatey 31129 CPVC cement in?
Recommended application range is 40 F to 110 F (4 C to 43 C). The spec data carries a wider stated application floor of -15 F / -26 C, but for a normal install plan around the recommended 40 F minimum. Below that, cure times stretch and joints need longer set before pressure.
6) Do I still need a primer with Oatey 31129 orange CPVC cement?
That is a code call, not a product limitation. The 31129 is a one-step orange cement that solvent welds CPVC on its own, but many jurisdictions still require a primer on CPVC potable water joints. Check what your inspector enforces; if primer is required, add a purple CPVC/PVC primer to the order.
7) Is Oatey 31129 rated for pressure piping or just drain lines?
Pressure pipe is its stated application. It is intended for CPVC pressure systems, cold and hot water up to 200 F / 93 C, not for gravity DWV in another material.
8) Is the 8 oz can of Oatey 31129 enough for a repipe, or should I size up?
The 8 oz can is a repair and small-branch size, roughly 0.019 cubic foot of product at about 0.652 lb, with the dauber built into the lid. For a single fixture branch or a service call it is the right buy. For a full multi-unit repipe or 2 inch and larger mains, a quart is the more practical size so you are not swapping cans mid-run while working time is ticking.
