OATEY 31127 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can Oatey 31127 orange cement be used on PVC or ABS pipe, or is it CPVC only?
Oatey 31127 is a CPVC-only solvent cement. It solvent welds CPVC pipe and fittings, and the product material is listed as CPVC. For PVC drain or pressure lines, or for ABS DWV, you need the cement formulated for that material instead. The orange color is how the inspector tells at a glance that a CPVC-rated cement was used on the joint.
2) What size CPVC pipe will this Oatey medium body cement handle?
All schedules and classes of CPVC pipe and fittings up to 6 inch diameter, with interference fit. Above 6 inch you are outside what this cement is rated for. The medium viscosity is the reason it covers that range: it fills gaps on larger fittings and gives more working time than a thin, regular body cement.
3) Is Oatey 31127 approved for potable water lines?
It complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements, which is the standard for materials in contact with drinking water, and it meets ASTM F493, the spec for CPVC solvent cement. It is also approved for use with Corzan CPVC piping systems.
4) Can I use this CPVC cement on hot water lines?
Yes, cold and hot water systems up to 200 F / 93 C. That covers domestic hot water and hydronic CPVC runs. Note that 200 F is the service temperature of the finished joint, not the temperature you apply it at.
5) What temperature can I apply Oatey 31127 at on a winter job site?
The recommended application range is 40 F to 110 F (4 C to 43 C). Below 40 F you are outside the recommended window for solvent welding with this cement, so on a cold site either tent and heat the work area or schedule the joints for the warmer part of the day. Keep the can itself warm too, since the cement thickens as it chills.
6) Does this Oatey cement meet low-VOC rules in California?
It is a low VOC solvent cement meeting California South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) 1168/316A or BAAQMD Method 40 requirements. It is also certified to UL GREENGUARD Gold, which matters on schools, healthcare and LEED-tracked work where indoor air quality is specified.
7) Do I need a primer with Oatey 31127 orange CPVC cement?
Oatey 31127 is the cement itself, not a one-step cement/primer combination, so plan on a separate primer unless your local code allows a no-primer CPVC cement. Many jurisdictions require a purple primer on CPVC pressure pipe so the inspector can see it was used. Check what your AHJ calls for before the rough-in walkthrough.
8) Is Oatey 31127 rated for pressure piping or just drain lines?
It is classified for pressure pipe application and rated for cold and hot water systems to 200 F, so it is the right cement for CPVC potable and hydronic pressure lines up to 6 inch. That same rating means it is fine on CPVC DWV if you are running CPVC there, but it is not a substitute for PVC or ABS DWV cement.
9) How much cement is in the Oatey 31127 can and how far will it go?
31127 is the gallon size, listed at 0.199 volume and 8.7 pounds shipping weight. A gallon is a crew-quantity container for multi-family rough-in or a commercial riser package rather than a service-truck size; for a handful of repair joints a pint or quart of CPVC cement is the sensible buy.
10) What is the manufacturer part number for the gallon of Oatey orange CPVC cement?
The Oatey part number is 31127, UPC 038753311272, for the gallon of medium body orange CPVC cement. Order by that number when you are standardizing a job or restocking a shop, since Oatey uses separate numbers for each container size in the same formulation.
