OATEY 82038 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size pipe does the Oatey 82038 general purpose drain connect to?
The 82038 has a 4 inch ABS pipe base, so it solvent-welds onto 4 inch ABS DWV pipe. If your rough-in is 3 inch, this body will not fit it, even though the product size range is catalogued as 3in-4in.
2) Is the grate on the Oatey 82038 drain brass or plastic?
The grate is brass, 5 inches across, with a round ring. The drain body itself is ABS. That combination gives you a metal walking surface over a plastic body, which is what you want in a utility room or basement floor where a plastic strainer would get scuffed or cracked.
3) What is the Oatey 82038 drain actually used for?
It is a general purpose floor drain, the kind set in a basement, mechanical room, laundry, or garage slab to carry off incidental water. It is not a shower drain assembly and it is not a roof drain. The brass grate and round ring sit flush at the finished floor over a 4 inch ABS body.
4) Will a 5 inch brass grate cover the 4 inch pipe opening properly?
Yes. The grate is 5 inches, an inch larger than the 4 inch pipe base, so it laps the opening and seats on the round ring rather than dropping into the pipe. When you pour or patch the slab, plan the finished floor around the 5 inch grate diameter.
5) I need to order a replacement Oatey floor drain. What is the model number?
Oatey 82038 is the part number for the 4 inch ABS pipe base general purpose drain with the 5 inch brass grate and round ring. Order by 82038 to get the body, ring, and brass grate together.
