OATEY 88014 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Oatey 88014 roof drain PVC or ABS?
All ABS. Body, base and connection are ABS, so if the building's drainage system is PVC you'd be joining dissimilar plastics. Either run ABS to the drain or use a proper transition, because ABS-to-PVC solvent welding is not an approved joint under most codes.
2) Does the Oatey 88014 come with a strainer dome or do I buy that separately?
The plastic dome strainer is included with the 88014. You get the ABS drain body and the dome together, so there's no separate strainer to order to keep leaves and debris out of the leader.
3) How big is the base flange on the Oatey 88014 roof drain?
The base measures 6 inches in diameter. That's the footprint you need to allow for in the roof deck opening and the flashing detail around the drain body.
4) Is a plastic roof drain like the Oatey 88014 the right choice, or should I use cast iron?
An ABS drain such as the 88014 suits residential and light commercial flat or low-slope roofs where the drain is not exposed to vehicle or foot traffic loads. At 4.75 pounds it's light enough for one person to set and handle on a roof. Cast iron bodies are the call for heavy commercial roofs, promenade decks, or anywhere the specification demands a load-rated drain.
