OATEY O71980 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the Oatey 71980 roof drain dome used for?
It's the ABS plastic dome (strainer) that sits over a roof drain, keeping leaves, gravel and debris out of the drain body and the leader piping below while rainwater passes through. It's the replaceable wear part on a roof drain assembly, not the drain body itself, so if the dome on an existing drain has cracked or gone missing, this is the piece that goes back on.
2) Is the Oatey 71980 dome plastic or cast iron, and does that matter on a flat commercial roof?
It's ABS plastic. That matters two ways: ABS won't rust or corrode the way a steel or cast strainer can under standing water and roof chemicals, and it stays light enough for one person to set on a ballasted roof without help. Where a roof takes foot traffic, carts, or snow-removal equipment, a metal dome is the tougher choice; ABS suits general low-traffic flat and low-slope roof drains.
3) What part number do I give my supplier for the Oatey plastic roof drain dome?
Oatey 71980 is the manufacturer part number, and it's sold as a single model with no size or finish options to specify. UPC is 038753719801. For a distributor stocking it, that's the whole ordering spec - one SKU, no variants to break out.
