OATEY 88016 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size pipe does the Oatey 88016 roof drain connect to?
The Oatey 88016 is a 6 inch roof drain, so it is sized for 6 inch drainage piping. Body and outlet are ABS, which means it solvent welds to ABS DWV pipe rather than joining to PVC with the same cement. If your roof leader is PVC, you need the PVC version of the drain or a transition fitting.
2) Does the Oatey 88016 roof drain come with the strainer dome, or is that ordered separately?
The plastic dome strainer is included with the 88016. You get the ABS drain body and the dome together, so nothing extra is needed to keep leaves and debris out of the leader once it is installed.
3) Is a plastic dome roof drain strong enough for a commercial roof, or should I use cast iron?
An ABS drain with a plastic dome like the 88016 suits residential and light commercial low slope roofs where nothing rolls or walks over the drain. Plastic is lighter to set and will not corrode, but it does not take foot traffic or maintenance cart loads the way a cast iron body with a ductile grate does. On a roof with regular service traffic or equipment access, spec a metal-bodied drain instead.
4) How much does the Oatey 6 inch ABS roof drain weigh for a roof hoist?
About 4.9 pounds. That is one-hand light, so a single roofer can carry several up a ladder and set them without a hoist, which is the main practical reason crews choose an ABS drain over a metal one on a re-roof.
