OATEY 78014 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size pipe does the Oatey 78014 roof drain connect to?
The 78014 roof drain has a 4 inch PVC outlet, so it solvent welds to 4 inch PVC drain pipe. Both the drain body and the connection are PVC, which means standard PVC cement and primer, no gasket or clamping ring to source separately. If your roof leader is cast iron or ABS, you are joining dissimilar material and that is a transition fitting decision, not something this drain handles on its own.
2) Can I use the Oatey 78014 as a replacement for an existing 4 inch roof drain?
Only if what is coming out of the roof deck is 4 inch PVC that you can cut clean and solvent weld to. The 78014 is a PVC to PVC connection at 4 inches. Replacing a cast iron drain body means you are also dealing with the flashing and the membrane tie-in, and the existing leader material has to be adapted before this drain has anything to glue to.
3) Why use a domed roof drain instead of an open drain opening?
The dome is the strainer. On a flat or low slope roof the debris load is leaves, gravel, ballast and torn membrane scraps, and an open 4 inch opening takes all of it straight into the leader where you cannot reach it. The plastic dome on the 78014 keeps that material on the roof surface where a maintenance crew can sweep it off. If you are draining a deck or balcony where nothing falls on it, a flat grate profile is the lower profile choice; on an actual roof, use the dome.
4) Does the Oatey 78014 roof drain come with the dome, or is that ordered separately?
The dome ships with it. Ordering the 78014 gets you the PVC drain body and the plastic dome as one item, one MPN, one part to receive. You still supply the PVC primer and cement for the outlet joint and whatever your roofing system requires for the membrane flashing.
5) How much does the Oatey 78014 roof drain weigh for a roof hoist?
5.35 pounds. It is a one-hand carry up a ladder, and a crew setting several on a re-roof can stage them without a lift. That light weight is the tradeoff for plastic versus a cast iron roof drain, which is the heavier and more impact resistant option where foot traffic or ballast movement is a concern.
