OATEY 11891 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size vent pipe does the Oatey 11891 No-Calk roof flashing fit?
The 11891 is the 4 inch version. The flashing slides down over a 4 inch vent pipe and the rubber collar seals against the pipe, so no caulking is needed at the penetration.
2) Can I use this Oatey thermoplastic flashing on a hot-mopped or built-up roof?
No. The rigid black thermoplastic base is not for hot-mopped or built-up roofs. Hot asphalt work needs a metal base flashing instead. On shingle or comparable steep-slope roofs the thermoplastic base is fine.
3) Is this Oatey flashing approved for a Type B gas vent?
Yes, the 11891 is approved for Type B installations and is rated for 180 degrees F continuous heat. That heat rating is the number to check against your vent's operating temperature before you set it.
4) Can I paint the black base on an Oatey No-Calk roof flashing to match my shingles?
Don't. Paint and petroleum based products should not be used on the plastic base or the rubber collar; they break the material down. The base and sealing collar are supplied in black and are made non-fading so they hold color without paint.
5) Do I need to caulk around the pipe after installing this Oatey flashing?
No sealant is needed at the pipe. That is what No-Calk means: the flexible collar grips the vent pipe directly to make the seal. You still shingle over the upslope edge of the base the normal way so water sheds onto the flashing, not under it.
6) Will a plastic roof flashing crack or fade after a few seasons in the sun?
The 11891 uses a rigid thermoplastic base and collar specified as non-fading and non-cracking, which is the reason property managers use these on shingle roofs instead of a painted metal base that chalks. Keep solvents and petroleum products off it and it holds up.
