OATEY 11920 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What roof pitch will the Oatey 11920 No-Calk flashing work on?
The thermoplastic base on the Oatey 11920 handles pitch from 0 to 45 degrees, so it covers everything from a dead-flat deck to a steep shingle slope. It is not for hot-mopped or built-up roofs, so on those assemblies you need a different flashing.
2) Do I need to caulk around the pipe after installing this Oatey roof flashing?
No caulking. The self-sealing collar slides down over the vent pipe and seals against it on its own, which is the point of the No-Calk design. Just do not run petroleum based products or paint over the collar or the plastic base, as those degrade it.
3) Will one Oatey All-Flash flashing fit more than one vent pipe size?
Yes. The patented All-Flash collar is built to seal on multiple pipe sizes, so a single 11920 covers a range of vent stacks instead of being tied to one diameter. That is why plumbers and roofers carry it as a stocking item rather than sizing a flashing per stack.
4) Can the Oatey 11920 handle a hot vent or Type B gas vent?
It is rated for 180 degrees F continuous heat and approved for Type B installations, so it can be used over a Type B gas vent as well as ordinary plumbing vent stacks. For anything running hotter than that continuous rating, use a metal-base flashing instead.
5) Should I use a thermoplastic base flashing or a metal base flashing for a plumbing vent?
A thermoplastic base like the Oatey 11920 is the usual choice on shingle and other nailed roofs at 0 to 45 degrees pitch, and its collar needs no caulk. Go to a metal base where the roof is hot-mopped or built-up, or where the flashing will see heat above the 180 degrees F continuous rating, since the plastic base is excluded from those assemblies.
6) Can I paint the roof flashing to match my shingles?
No. Paint and petroleum based products must not be applied to the flashing collar or the plastic base on the 11920, both because they attack the material and because they can compromise the self-sealing collar. If color matching matters on a visible slope, choose a flashing intended to be painted.
