1) What pipe sizes does the Oatey 12956 roof flashing fit?
The 12956 All-Flash No-Calk flashing handles 3 inch and 4 inch pipe with one collar. The patented All-Flash collar design is what lets a single part cover more than one pipe size, so if your stacks on a roof are mixed 3 and 4 inch you can stock one flashing instead of two.
2) What roof pitch can this Oatey No-Calk flashing be used on?
The stamped aluminum base is rated for pitch from 0 to 40 degrees, which is up to a 10/12 roof. Above that pitch you need a flashing built for steeper slope.
3) Can I use this flashing on a hot-mopped or built-up flat roof?
No. The 12956 is specifically not for hot-mopped or built-up roofs. Use it on shingle, shake, or similar mechanically applied roofing within its 0 to 40 degree pitch range, and specify a flashing rated for bituminous application on a built-up assembly.
4) Does the Oatey 12956 need caulk or sealant around the pipe?
No caulking. The self-sealing collar slides down over the pipe and seals on its own, which is the point of the No-Calk design. One caution: do not use petroleum based products or paint on the collar, as that attacks the seal material. The collar will not fade, so there is no cosmetic reason to paint it either.
5) Is this flashing approved for a Type B gas vent?
Yes, the 12956 is approved for Type B installations and rated for 180 degrees F continuous heat. That covers B vent as well as plumbing vent stacks in the 3 to 4 inch range.
6) How big is the base on the Oatey 12956, and will it tuck under a shingle course?
The base measures 12 x 15 inches. It is rustproof stamped aluminum, soft enough to shape to the roof deck and to the contour of the course above, which is how you get the upper edge under the shingles and the lower edge lapped over. Lay out your courses against the 12 x 15 footprint before you cut the pipe hole.
7) Aluminum or lead roof flashing for a vent stack, which should I use?
Aluminum, as on the 12956, gives you a rustproof stamped base that shapes easily and a self-sealing collar that needs no caulk, and it stays light on the truck at about 0.55 lb per unit. Lead-base flashings are the usual choice where roofers want to dress the sleeve down over the pipe by hand or where a hot-applied roof is involved, which this aluminum base is not rated for. Note the aluminum version does carry a 180 degree F continuous heat rating and Type B approval, so heat is not the deciding factor.
8) I manage a multi-family property with mixed vent sizes. Can I standardize on one flashing?
For 3 inch and 4 inch stacks, yes. One 12956 covers both sizes through the All-Flash collar, so a maintenance crew can carry a single SKU for the majority of vent penetrations. The limits to watch are roof type and slope: shingle-type roofs from flat up to 10/12, and not built-up or hot-mopped assemblies. Buildings with those roofs need a different flashing.
