OATEY 12953 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What pipe sizes does the Oatey 12953 No-Calk roof flashing fit?
The Oatey 12953 All-Flash No-Calk flashing covers 3 inch through 4 inch vent pipe. The collar is self-sealing and slides down over the pipe, so no caulk is needed at the penetration. If your stack is 1-1/2 or 2 inch, you need a different size boot; the collar will not seal a pipe smaller than its rated range.
2) What roof pitch can the Oatey 12953 flashing be installed on?
The stamped metal base handles pitch from 0 to 40 degrees, which is up to a 10/12 roof. The aluminum base shapes easily, so it conforms to the deck as you nail it off. Steeper than 10/12 and you are outside what this base is rated for.
3) Can I use the Oatey No-Calk aluminum flashing on a hot-mopped or built-up roof?
No. The 12953 is not for hot-mopped or built-up roofs. It is intended for shingle and similar pitched roof assemblies where the base can be shingled over. For a built-up or modified bitumen roof, use a flashing made for that assembly.
4) Is this Oatey flashing OK over a Type B vent or a hot flue?
It is rated for 180 degrees F continuous heat and approved for Type B installations. That covers Type B gas vent penetrations within that temperature limit. Do not put petroleum based products or paint on the collar, as either will attack the sealing material.
5) How big is the base on the Oatey 12953, and will it lay into a standard shingle course?
The base measures 12 x 15 inches, which gives you room to slide the upper edge under the course above and lap the lower edge over the course below in a normal shingle install. The stamped aluminum shapes to the deck rather than fighting it.
6) Do I need sealant or caulk to install the Oatey No-Calk flashing?
No caulking at the pipe. The collar seals itself as it slides over the stack, which is the point of the No-Calk design. The base is fastened and weathered in by the shingle courses the same as any pitched-roof pipe flashing.
7) Will the gray finish on this Oatey roof flashing fade or rust out?
The base is rustproof stamped aluminum with a gray powder coat, and Oatey states the collar will not fade. Keep paint off the collar though; painting it is specifically ruled out, so if you are matching a roof color, the powder coated gray base is what you get.
