1) Will the Oatey 43793 saddle tee let me tap a 3 inch branch into an existing 4 inch PVC drain line?
That's exactly what the 43793 kit is built for: a 4 inch run with a 3 inch outlet. The saddle solvent welds to the existing 4 inch Schedule 40 DWV line and is clamped down with the metal V-bolts, washers and nuts that come in the kit, so you're not cutting the line apart and rebuilding it with a wye. The tee takes the incoming 3 inch line inside the socket, or joins to a Sch. 40 DWV fitting.
2) Can a PVC saddle tee be used on a pressurized water line?
No. The Oatey 43793 saddle tee is rated for working pressure up to 10 PSI, which is drain, waste and vent service only. Domestic water and any supply piping run far above that. Keep this one on gravity DWV lines.
3) My building has cast iron drain stack, not PVC. Can I still use the Oatey 43793 saddle tee?
Yes, with a conversion gasket. The 43793 saddle tee is PVC and bonds by solvent weld to PVC, but it can be used with a conversion gasket for cast iron, with the V-bolts in the kit doing the mechanical clamping. Order the gasket separately, it isn't in the kit.
4) What comes in the Oatey 43793 kit, and what else do I need to buy to finish the tap?
The kit gives you the PVC saddle tee itself plus the metal V-bolts, washers and nuts that strap it to the pipe. Everything else is on you: the PVC pipe is not included, and you'll need solvent cement and primer to weld the saddle to the line and to make up the 3 inch branch. If you're tapping cast iron, add a conversion gasket.
5) Saddle tee or cut in a wye fitting when adding a branch drain?
A saddle tee like the Oatey 43793 is the move when you can't take the line out of service or can't get enough spring in the pipe to work a wye in. It bolts and solvent welds onto the outside of the existing 4 inch run, so you drill one hole instead of cutting out a section and rebuilding it with couplings. A cut-in wye gives you a swept, directional connection for flow; the saddle is the retrofit answer where access is tight, on a line running no more than 10 PSI.
6) Does the Oatey 43793 saddle tee work on a 3 inch line instead of a 4 inch one?
The 43793 is designed for tapping into a 3 in. or 4 in. Schedule 40 DWV line, with a 3 in. outlet on the tee. The saddle body has to seat to the curve of the pipe you're strapping it to, so match the kit to the run diameter you actually have before you drill.
7) How does the 3 inch branch pipe connect to the Oatey saddle tee outlet?
Two ways. The tee accepts the incoming line straight inside the socket, or it joins with a Schedule 40 DWV fitting if you're transitioning to an elbow or coupling at the saddle. Either way it's a solvent weld joint in PVC.
