OATEY 74138 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Oatey 74138 cleanout come with the ring, or do I order that separately?
The round ring is included. The 74138 ships as a complete general purpose assembly: 4 inch PVC pipe base, round adjustable ring, and the 6 inch brass cover. You supply the 4 inch PVC pipe, primer and solvent cement to set it.
2) Is the cover on the Oatey 74138 brass or plastic?
Brass. The 74138 pairs a PVC body with a 6 inch brass cover, which is the combination usually specified where the cleanout finishes in a floor and the top gets walked on or has to be backed out with a wrench years later. The plastic-cover versions are cheaper but chew up easier under a pipe wrench.
3) Can I use a general purpose cleanout like the Oatey 74138 in a concrete slab pour?
A general purpose cleanout is the light-duty style, meant for floors that see foot traffic, not vehicle wheel loads. Set in a slab it works fine for interior floors and mechanical rooms. For a driveway, parking area or loading dock, step up to a heavy duty cast iron cleanout with a traffic-rated top instead.
4) Will the Oatey 74138 work as a replacement top for an existing 4 inch cleanout in my building?
Only if the existing cleanout is also a 4 inch PVC pipe base type. The 74138 is a complete assembly, base included, and the base is solvent-welded to PVC pipe. If you only need to replace a damaged brass plug or ring on an existing housing, order the matching cover and ring rather than this full unit, and match the existing thread size before you buy.
