OATEY 82146 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does this Oatey drain adjust for finished floor height?
Yes, the 82146 is an adjustable commercial drain, so the grate assembly moves up and down to meet the finished floor after the body is set. That matters when you are pouring concrete or setting tile over the rough-in and do not know the exact slab thickness at the time the drain body goes in.
2) Is the grate on the Oatey 82146 brass or plastic?
Brass. The 82146 pairs an ABS drain body with a 6 inch brass grate and square ring, so the walking surface is metal while the body below the floor is plastic. That is the usual choice where you want a traffic-rated metal top but do not want a cast iron body.
3) Can I use the Oatey 82146 in a concrete slab pour?
That is what an adjustable commercial drain is for. The ABS body is set and tied into the 6 inch ABS line before the pour, then the brass grate and square ring are adjusted up to the finished surface. Just protect the throat during the pour so grout and concrete do not set inside the adjustment threads.
4) Why a square ring on a round floor drain?
The square ring on the 82146 gives you a straight edge to terminate tile or a membrane against, which is easier to cut to than a circle and cleaner in a tiled commercial restroom or kitchen floor. The grate itself is the 6 inch brass round.
5) How heavy is the Oatey 82146 drain assembly?
The assembly is listed at 4 pounds, which is light enough to set and adjust by hand, unlike a comparable cast iron commercial drain. Worth knowing if you are carrying a dozen of them to an upper floor.
