OATEY 72146 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe does the Oatey 72146 commercial floor drain connect to?
The 72146 drain body is PVC with a PVC connection, so it solvent-welds to PVC DWV pipe. If the rough-in under the slab is cast iron or ABS, this is the wrong body material for a direct glued joint.
2) Can I set the drain height after the slab is poured?
Yes. The 72146 is an adjustable commercial drain, so the grate assembly threads up or down to bring the strainer flush with the finished floor after the rough-in is set. That is the main reason to pick it over a fixed-height drain where tile or topping thickness is still unknown.
3) Is the grate on the Oatey 72146 brass or plastic?
The 6 inch round grate is brass, mounted on a PVC drain body. Brass holds up to foot traffic and cart wheels better than a plastic strainer, which is why it gets specified in commercial spaces.
4) What is the square ring included with the Oatey 72146 for?
The 72146 ships with a square ring in addition to the 6 inch brass grate. The square ring frames the round grate so the drain can be set into a square tile cut or membrane layout instead of coring a round opening.
5) How much does the Oatey 72146 drain assembly weigh for shipping and handling?
The complete 72146 assembly weighs 5.3 pounds, body, brass grate and ring together. Light enough to set by hand on a one-man rough-in.
