OATEY 30884 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size PVC pipe can Oatey 30884 gray cement be used on?
Oatey 30884 medium body gray PVC cement handles all schedules and classes of PVC pipe and fittings up to 6 inch diameter with an interference fit. Above that size you need a heavy body cement instead.
2) Can I use Oatey 30884 PVC cement on potable water lines?
Yes. The 30884 gray cement complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements and meets ASTM D2564, and it is listed for DWV, pressure pipe, potable water and electrical conduit work.
3) How cold can it be when I glue PVC with Oatey 30884?
The recommended application range is 40 to 110 degrees F (4 to 43 degrees C). Below 40 F the solvent weld is outside the manufacturer's recommended window, so plan crawlspace and outdoor winter work around it or warm the joint area.
4) Will Oatey 30884 gray cement meet low-VOC rules in California?
It is a low VOC solvent cement that meets the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) 1168/316A and BAAQMD Method 40 requirements, so it is usable on jobs in those air districts. Oatey solvent cements and primers are also certified to UL Greenguard Gold.
5) Can I use this gray cement on CPVC or ABS pipe?
No. The 30884 is formulated for PVC only. CPVC needs a CPVC-specific cement, ABS needs ABS cement, and a PVC-to-ABS transition needs a transition cement. Using PVC cement on the wrong resin gives you a joint that will not hold.
6) Is medium body or heavy body PVC cement right for my job?
Medium body, like the Oatey 30884, is the general-purpose choice for pipe through 6 inch where the fit is an interference fit. Its medium viscosity fills small gaps and gives more working time than a regular body cement, which matters on larger fittings or when you are assembling several joints in a run. Regular body is thinner and better on small diameter tight-fit work; heavy body is for larger diameter pipe beyond this one's range.
7) Is gray PVC cement okay for electrical conduit, or do I need a different product?
Gray is the usual color for conduit work and this one is listed for electrical applications, so the same can covers PVC conduit and plumbing PVC. Application type on the spec is electrical conduit, and the description also lists DWV, pressure and potable water.
8) What temperature can the finished PVC joint handle in service?
Maximum use temperature for the solvent weld is 60 degrees C. That puts it in DWV, cold water and conduit territory; hot water distribution lines should be run in a material rated for the temperature.
