1) What size PVC pipe can Oatey 30887 medium body gray cement be used on?
Oatey 30887 medium body gray cement handles all schedules and classes of PVC pipe and fittings up to 6 inch diameter with an interference fit. Above 6 inch you are outside what this cement is rated for. Because it is medium viscosity, it fills small gaps in the joint better than a regular body cement and gives you more working time before it sets.
2) Can this Oatey gray cement be used on potable water lines, or is it DWV only?
Both. The 30887 gray cement is approved for DWV, pressure pipe, potable water and electrical (conduit) applications. This one is a fast setting formula, so in the upper end of that range plan on less working time.
5) Can I use this gray cement on CPVC or ABS pipe?
No. The 30887 is formulated to solvent weld PVC and is specified for PVC pipe and fittings only. CPVC needs a CPVC-specific cement, and ABS needs ABS cement or a transition cement for an ABS-to-PVC joint. Using PVC cement on CPVC is a failed joint waiting to happen on a pressure line.
6) Do I still need primer with Oatey 30887 gray cement?
The 30887 is a cement only, not an all-in-one cement and primer. Order PVC primer separately for jobs where code or the inspector requires it. Purple primer is the usual choice on potable and pressure work because it gives visual proof of application; Oatey's clear primer is used where the purple stain is not wanted. One gallon of cement will outlast a quart of primer on most runs, so size the primer to the job.
7) Why choose gray medium body cement over clear regular body for PVC?
Two reasons contractors pick the gray medium body. Viscosity: medium body fills the gap on looser interference fits and on larger diameters where a thin regular body cement can starve the joint. Color: gray reads as a finished commercial joint and hides better on gray electrical conduit and on exposed pressure piping than a clear cement does. Regular body clear is fine on small diameter tight-fit DWV; once you are into bigger pipe up to the 6 inch limit, the medium body is the safer pick.
