OATEY 38496 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Oatey 38496 fire rated box work in a 2-hour rated wall?
Yes. The Oatey 38496 is Warnock Hersey certified for both 1-hour and 2-hour fire-rated walls. The box is Bulk Molding Compound with UL-classified intumescent pads and UL-classified insulating material, which is what maintains the wall rating where the washing machine outlet penetrates it.
2) How does the Oatey 38496 box mount to studs?
It comes with adjustable metal mounting brackets, so you can set the box in or out to land flush with the finished drywall face rather than being fixed to the stud edge. That adjustment is what lets the faceplate sit tight to the wall on different drywall thicknesses.
3) Can I pressure test the rough-in with the Oatey 38496 installed?
Yes. The box has an easy-to-remove test cap, so you can leave it in place for the rough plumbing test and pull it when you set the valves and finish the wall.
4) Does the Oatey 38496 let me arrange the supply valves and drain the way my layout needs?
It does. The box is built for flexible valve and drain arrangement, so the supply connections and the 2 inch DWV drain can be oriented to suit how the piping comes into the bay instead of forcing one fixed configuration.
