OATEY 39011 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does the Oatey 39011 metal grille faceplate actually do?
It is the vented cover for an Oatey recessed air admittance valve wall box. The grille lets air move to the Sure-Vent behind the drywall while the box protects the valve and keeps it accessible for service. The faceplate alone is not a vent, and it is not a finish cover for a plain drain cleanout.
2) How does the 39011 grille mount to the wall box?
With screws into the box frame. There is no snap-in or clip mounting, so the box frame has to be intact and reachable at the drywall face. The box itself carries four mounting brackets that fasten it to the studs, so the grille does not take any structural load.
3) Do I get the wall box when I order the 39011, or just the grille?
The 39011 is the metal grille faceplate for the wall box, ordered under Oatey part number 39011. If you are roughing in a new recessed air admittance valve location you also need the wall box itself, which is the part with the four stud-mounting brackets.
4) Will the Oatey 39011 faceplate work with air admittance valves other than Sure-Vent?
Yes. It can be used with any air admittance valve that needs a recessed installation, so it is not limited to Oatey Sure-Vent valves. What it must match is the Oatey wall box it screws into, since the mounting is screws into that box frame.
5) Can I replace a broken air admittance valve without opening the drywall if I have this grille and box?
That is the point of the assembly. The grille unscrews from the box frame, which gives you access to the air admittance valve behind the drywall without cutting the wall open. For a property manager servicing units, it turns a drywall repair into a screwdriver job.
6) Is the Oatey 39011 a metal or plastic faceplate, and will it hold up in a multi-family unit?
Metal, which is why it is specified where a plastic cover would get kicked or broken, like a laundry wall or an island sink cabinet face in rental units. At roughly 1.03 lb it is substantially heavier than a plastic cover of the same footprint, and it stays screwed to the box frame rather than clipping in.
