OATEY 38648 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do I need to buy Oatey 38648 brackets separately, or do they come with the box?
Oatey plastic outlet boxes ship with 4 support brackets for mounting, so a new box normally arrives with what it needs. The 38648 is ordered on its own when brackets are lost, broken on a tear-out, or when you want spares on the truck for retrofit work where the original brackets did not survive the demo.
2) What are the brackets made of, and will they hold up behind a wall?
High impact polystyrene, same family of material as the box body itself, in white. That means no rust or galvanic issues in a damp wall cavity, but it also means it is a support bracket, not a structural member, and should be fastened to framing the way the box instructions call for.
3) Is the Oatey 38648 heavy enough to need special handling on a multi-unit job?
No. Listed product weight is 0.05 with a volume of 0.034, so these are light plastic pieces that stock easily in bulk for multi-family or hotel rough-in work where every laundry or ice maker box needs its support brackets.
