OATEY O29025 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can Oatey Safe-Flo silver solder be used on potable water lines?
Yes. Safe-Flo silver wire solder meets ASTM Standard B-32 and the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act, so it's the solder to reach for on domestic water piping rather than a leaded 50/50. The alloy is copper, bismuth, tin and silver.
2) Will Oatey Safe-Flo solder work on aluminum tubing?
No. Safe-Flo silver wire solder is not recommended for use on aluminum. It's a copper, bismuth, tin and silver alloy intended for copper and copper-alloy tube and fittings, so an aluminum joint needs a dedicated aluminum filler instead.
3) What temperature does Oatey Safe-Flo silver solder melt at, and can I run it with a propane torch?
The melting range is 420 to 460 degrees F. That's well inside what a standard propane torch delivers on typical residential and light commercial copper tube, so no MAPP or oxy-acetylene rig is required. It is a solder, not a brazing alloy, so it doesn't ask for the red-heat temperatures a braze joint does.
4) Does Oatey Safe-Flo silver solder have flux in it, or do I need to buy flux separately?
It's solid silver wire solder, not a flux-cored product, so you apply a separate soldering flux to the cleaned tube and fitting before you heat the joint. Order flux along with it if you don't already carry it.
5) How long can Oatey Safe-Flo solder sit on the shelf before it goes bad?
Unlimited shelf life. Stocking it deep for an MRO crib or a facility parts room carries no expiry risk, unlike the flux that goes with it.
