1) Is Oatey 23002 solder safe for potable water lines?
Yes. The Oatey 23002 wire solder is lead free, formulated for plumbing and potable water line work, and meets ASTM B32 along with the requirements of the Safe Water Drinking Act. That is the combination an inspector looks for on domestic water piping.
2) Can I use Oatey 23002 lead free solder on aluminum?
No. This silver-bearing lead free wire solder is not recommended for aluminum. It is built for copper plumbing tube and fittings. For aluminum you need an aluminum-specific brazing or soldering alloy instead.
3) What is Oatey 23002 solder made of, and what temperature does it melt at?
It is a copper, bismuth, tin and silver alloy with a melting range of 420 to 460 degrees F. That range is low enough for a standard propane torch on copper tube, so you don't need MAPP or oxy-acetylene to make the joint.
4) Do I need flux too, or is this solder self-fluxing?
The 23002 is solid wire solder, not a flux-core product, so you buy a separate water-soluble or petrolatum-based lead free tinning flux rated for potable water and brush the fitting before heating. Ordering the solder alone will not complete the joint.
