OATEY 22004 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can Oatey 22004 solder be used on potable water copper lines?
Yes. The Oatey 22004 is a lead-free 95/5 alloy (95% tin, 5% antimony) that meets the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act, so it is made for potable water copper joints. It also complies with California and Vermont lead content regulations, which matters if you are working in either state or buying for a facility that enforces those limits.
2) Is 95/5 solder an acceptable substitute for 50/50 on a repair to older copper plumbing?
For potable water, yes, and it is the required direction. Lead-bearing 50/50 is no longer permitted on drinking water lines; the 22004 is a lead-free 95/5 tin-antimony alloy that meets Safe Drinking Water Act requirements. The only practical difference on the job is heat: the 450 to 464 degree F melt range runs hotter than 50/50, so hold the flame on the fitting slightly longer before feeding wire.
3) What is the melting range of 95/5 wire solder, and will a propane torch get there?
The 22004 melts between 450 and 464 degrees F. A standard propane torch reaches that range on copper tube and fittings without trouble; MAPP gas gets you there faster on larger diameters. Because 95/5 melts higher than old 50/50 lead solder, expect a bit more heating time per joint.
4) Besides water lines, what else is 95/5 solder used for?
Oatey's 95/5 wire solder is commonly used on potable water piping, refrigeration lines, and cooling equipment. The tin-antimony alloy holds up better at elevated service temperatures than lead-bearing solders, which is why it shows up on refrigeration and chilled water work as well as domestic water.
5) Do I still need flux with Oatey 95/5 solid wire solder?
Yes. The 22004 is solid wire solder, not an acid-core or flux-core product, so you need a separate water-soluble or petrolatum-based tinning flux rated for potable water. Clean and flux the tube and fitting before heating, or the solder will not draw into the joint.
6) Does solder go bad sitting in a truck or on a stockroom shelf?
No. Oatey lists unlimited shelf life for the 22004 95/5 wire solder, so a spool held in inventory or rattling around a service truck stays usable. Flux is the consumable with a dating concern, not the solder itself.
