OATEY 50192 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can Oatey 50192 50/50 solder be used on potable water lines?
No. The Oatey 50192 wire solder is a 50% tin / 50% lead alloy and contains lead, so it must not be used on drinking water lines. For potable copper work you need a lead-free solder. The 50192 is for non-potable applications only.
2) Can I buy 50/50 leaded solder in Indiana or Pennsylvania?
No. The Oatey 50192 leaded wire solder cannot be sold or used in Indiana or Pennsylvania. If you are working in either state, you need a lead-free solder instead.
3) What is the melting range of Oatey 50/50 wire solder?
The 50/50 alloy melts over a 361 to 421 degree F range. That spread means it passes through a pasty stage rather than going straight from solid to liquid, which is why it is forgiving on wiped joints and larger fittings. The related 40/60 alloy (40% tin, 60% lead) runs wider at 361 to 460 degrees F.
4) What is the difference between 50/50 and 40/60 solder?
It comes down to tin content. 50/50 is half tin, half lead and melts between 361 and 421 degrees F. 40/60 drops to 40% tin against 60% lead and melts from 361 up to 460 degrees F, so it stays pasty over a wider range. Both contain lead and are off limits for drinking water.
5) Do I need flux with Oatey 50/50 wire solder?
Yes. The 50192 is plain wire solder with no flux core, so you flux the joint separately with a soldering paste rated for the metals you are joining. Order flux alongside it if you do not already have it on the truck.
