OATEY 20307 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can Oatey 20307 50/50 bar solder be used on potable water lines?
No. The Oatey 20307 bar solder is a 50% tin / 50% lead alloy and contains lead, so it is not for use on drinking water lines. Use it for copper drain piping, tin plating, seaming joints, and sheet metal work. For potable water copper, you need a lead-free solder instead.
2) Is 50/50 lead solder legal to buy in my state?
The 20307 bar solder cannot be used or sold in Indiana or Pennsylvania. Everywhere else it is sold for non-potable work only, since it is a leaded alloy.
3) What temperature does Oatey 50/50 bar solder melt at?
It has a 361 to 421 degree F melting range, so it is not a eutectic solder: it passes through a pasty stage between those two points. For sheet metal seaming that plastic range is useful, it lets you work the joint before it sets. Keep the piece still until it drops below 361 F or you will get a disturbed joint.
4) Will 50/50 solder work on copper DWV drain lines?
Yes, copper drain piping is one of the listed uses for this 50/50 tin-lead alloy. Drain, waste and vent lines do not carry drinking water, so the lead content is not a concern there the way it is on supply piping.
5) Do I need flux with Oatey 50/50 bar solder?
Yes. Bar solder is a solid alloy with no flux core, so you need a separate paste or liquid flux matched to the metal you are joining, copper or tin plate or galvanized sheet. Clean the surface, flux it, then tin.
