OATEY 53014 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can Oatey 53014 50/50 solder be used on potable water lines?
No. The Oatey 53014 wire solder is a 50/50 alloy of 50% tin and 50% lead, and lead-bearing solder must not be used on drinking water lines. Use it for non-potable work only, such as drainage, waste and vent copper, HVAC condensate, or general sheet metal and electrical-adjacent tinning. For domestic water, you need a lead-free solder instead.
2) Is 50/50 lead solder legal to buy in every state?
Not everywhere. Oatey's 53014 50/50 wire solder cannot be sold or used in Indiana or Pennsylvania. If you are a contractor or MRO buyer working in those states, this is not the solder to standardize on.
3) What is the difference between 50/50 and 40/60 solder?
Tin content and melt range. The 50/50 alloy is half tin, half lead and flows from 361 to 421 degrees F. A 40/60 alloy is 40% tin and 60% lead and runs 361 to 460 degrees F, a wider pasty range that takes longer to set up. Higher tin, as in the 50/50, wets copper a bit more readily and solidifies over a shorter span, which is why 50/50 was the traditional pick for copper plumbing joints before lead-free became the requirement on potable systems.
4) Does this Oatey solder come with flux, or do I need to buy it separately?
The 53014 is solid wire solder only, no flux core and no paste included. You will need a separate tinning or petrolatum-based flux for copper work, plus a brush or dauber. Clean the tube and fitting with emery cloth or a fitting brush before fluxing.
